Yesterday was a day like any other from a caching perspective. I got my daily cache from an older series that teaches basic caching terminology such as GPS, Cache Owner, Icon, and Reviewer. Mine was STF (Second To Find, for those of you living under a caching rock for the last umpteen years). I pulled it out of its elongated hidey-hole and signed the log easily enough. However, as I put it back, I looked up the street. I saw a restaurant that has been the bane of my existence for a number of years. I’ve parked in its lot to go after another cache in the aforementioned series, that one being Event. It’s been constantly found by both experienced cachers and newer cachers, yet in five years of attempts I haven’t found it.
A handful of caches around the area elicit the same feeling in me. I’m not even talking about ones that are high Difficulty that I’ve never been able to put my hands on, or even micros in trees, which I am notoriously bad at spotting. I’m talking about those simple ones that never fail to elude me. I have literally seen thousands of caches and am rarely surprised by them anymore. What is it about some caches that makes them seemingly invisible that way? Why do I have a blind spot in some cases? I don’t begin to know. All I can tell you is that some days, my frustration goes to eleven over them. It’s like they scratch at the inside of my head at times, taunting me to come look for them again and again, knowing that I won’t be able to sign their logs because I won’t be able to find them. Sure, there will be other caches in other places, but there’s little more annoying than looking at the map and being presented with all these caches I can’t find staring back at me. I know one day I’ll find them and scratch that itch, but it certainly won’t be as soon as I would like.
If you came here today looking for deep insight, sorry, I don’t have that for you today.
