836. Kiowa, Elbert County (CO35)

I was making my way to the county clerk’s offices when I flew by this gorgeous red brick chonker a mile before what I thought would be my final destination.  I had already been wavering between going to the district court or the clerk’s office, and this one wasn’t even on my radar (or the map, for that matter).  I busted a U-turn on the deserted central street of Kiowa and went back to park in the shadow of the courthouse.  Technically, this could have been a historic courthouse and not the current one, but we all know that I am aesthetic trash, so this was the choice that I made.  A few photographs later, I was on my way back toward Denver.  I was done with the county at that point since I had already gotten the cache on the way into town.

I didn’t enjoy driving through the stupid switchback roads at over eleven thousand feet, but it was certainly picturesque. Besides, these things happen when you’re driving in Colorado.  The sun eventually rose over the snowy peaks, and, blasé as I am, I stopped a couple of times to admire the majesty of it all.  Once through the mountains, I continued through snowy towns and vacation villages until, arriving at my first destination, my work began in earnest in…
