Today was not the kind of day that I like to go out. It was over one hundred degrees, and the last thing I wanted to do was leave the air-conditioned comfort of a building or a vehicle. But when one needs a cache, one needs a cache. Besides (full disclosure), I haven’t been feeling too great lately, so I thought (possibly erroneously) that maybe a little sunlight might help. I found myself going for a recently placed cache (and by “recently,” I mean in the last month). It was outside a library that I had visited years ago for a cache across the street, and it is the way of things that the old ones plonk into the archive so that new ones can prosper and grow or some kind of crap like that.
At first, I was confused. I searched and searched. How could a large be so difficult to find, especially in an urban setting? Was my thinking addled because of the heat? I felt that was a possibility, but I eventually ended up finding it, a silver-taped jar reminiscent of the piping it was hidden among. My immediate thought was that it was not large as advertised, but once I realized that it was hidden by a kid, I let that go. Where was a nine-year-old gonna get an ammo can? I noticed beforehand that it was supposed to have a trackable in it, so I made a point of bringing one to trade out. I’m not as much in the trackable game since “The Incident,” but whenever I can, I try to switch one out for another. Cycling them helps at least a little. On this occasion, the owner is in amazing luck. The trackable wants to go to scenic Longview, and I have been known to find myself there from time to time. It also occurred to me that maybe I should contact the owner. I don’t know if they would like it to go directly there or if they were looking forward to it meandering its way there. I don’t want to circumvent their wishes despite both knowing and feeling that when a trackable goes into the world, it goes where it goes. I even happen to know a great trackable hotel that should have more than enough room for it.
But those are questions for a few weeks from now when I next go there. For now, I have my cache of the day without succumbing to the dreaded Spear of Apollo. Not dying of heatstroke is always worth a favorite in my book.
