We Loved It!

A couple of days ago, I went to an Event. Not just any Event, mind you. When a Lackey visits, of course I’m going to have a beverage with them! When a bunch of Lackeys visit? Even more so! When the Event was published last month, I was intrigued to see an unfamiliar name as the host. It turned out that a bunch of Lackeys would be here for some corporate training–type stuff, so our host (the one and only Love) found a place that serves good beer and invited us to join them. I’m not a beer guy (usually), but I still took her up on it and had a couple of ciders. Half a dozen of us showed up (unfortunately, several prospective attendees had to bow out at the last minute for various real-life reasons), but that was fine. We sipped our drinks and talked about how they brought Seattle weather here (in two days, it went from dry seventies to wet fifties) and the nature of their training conference (people who work at HQ still have to do the corporate thing). The Lackeys were grilled with hard questions from our peanut gallery. I myself questioned why they had to kill the Galveston Webcams when they were still active (which was only partially in jest because I know they’re being gently phased out), but I also got in a question about Events in general that’s been on my mind for a while (and will probably one day be its own entry). As the evening progressed, we got to the important things: how their various lodgings were both cool and questionable (a kitchen with no pans? Really?), what was around entertainment-wise, and what caches were on their agendas during their stay. Of course, the Necropolis was high on the list. A few suggestions were made based on locally filmed movies as well, especially since Initech was right around the corner from us. Eventually our host realized there wasn’t a log, so she used some imagination, bought a four-pack of some good craft brew, and put the can holder to good use. She was even kind enough to add a couple of people who had already left.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: there are a lot of very hard-working folks behind the scenes at HQ who quietly labor so that you and I can enjoy our secret world. I’m a fairly cynical and jaded guy, so I’m suspicious of any company, whether it’s a megacorp or a mom-and-pop, but the more Lackeys I meet, the more faith I have in Groundspeak on a corporate level. I’m not used to trusting corporate structures, but maybe I can just this once.

And before I’m done, I also want to give a special shoutout to Captain_Cookie, who has appeared in these pages before. It’s been a while, and I hope to see you folks again the next time I go to Seattle!
