857. Alamosa, Alamosa County (CO43)

As best as I could tell, I found the most reasonable equivalent of the courthouse. A number of cities in Colorado seem to have combined complexes, putting together county and district courts and offices into a single building or large compound of buildings. This one is where the county clerk was. It was the only one with a flagpole out front. It had the official vote dropbox and a veterans’ memorial close by. If this wasn’t the courthouse, I had no idea what could be a better candidate.

So feel that this is a time to point something out if I haven’t before. Alamosa is the location of Great Sand Dunes National Park. Several of my friends mentioned that I should visit if I got the chance but here’s the thing: I don’t especially care about visiting national parks. I think that national parks are great and I’m glad we have them, but I couldn’t otherwise care less about them. Sure, there have been a few notable exceptions, but otherwise meh. So no, I didn’t go to Great Sand Dunes, and if that is one of the reasons you think I suck, I promise you there are much bigger reasons to think ill of me.

All that said, I went ahead and grabbed the cache on the way into town. It was on the very edge of the county (the westernmost if you care about such things), an ammo can placed as a tribute to a long gone old cache at the same location. What was special about it that it deserved to be remembered? Your guess is as good as mine, but ultimately immaterial. Inveni, inscripsi, reposui. There was a trackable inside, but I didn’t feel like messing with it. I could have switched it out with one of the ones I was carrying, but I had a few too many trackables to keep up with. I was hoping to find a decent trackable hotel to drop some off at, but I wasn’t there yet. With my work in Alamosa County complete, I was on my way again, this time to…
