858. Conejos, Conejos County (CO44)

Another truly western courthouse, emulating adobe and everything. I wondered where the choice was made for it. It’s not a common stylistic thing in the courthouse world and I only think I’ve seen it a couple of times until now (if that), probably in New Mexico and Arizona. I actually wasn’t sure what I was going to find when I got there. I don’t do a ton of research on the places I’m going, but I did run across an article talking about how the courthouse had a fire a few years ago and renovations were still ongoing at the beginning of this year. I guess that was out of date info because it looked operational when I was parked outside.

Just as with Alamosa, I found the cache on the way to the courthouse. It was actually out of the way, but I wanted to avert a bigger possible issue. All of the caches in the county but one were on the wrong side from my next destination. That one was on the way to my next destination. But I went ahead and got it because if it wasn’t there, I could continue on to the courthouse and then to farther locations. But if I hit the courthouse and that one wasn’t there, I’d have to backtrack pretty far to go for another one. The cache was in the birthplace of former heavyweight boxing champion Jack Dempsey. They have a museum devoted to him and, though I’m not a sports person (and especially not a boxing person), I considered visiting it for a few minutes. However, I was running and gunning, so that would not have been prudent. The cache was easy enough, a keybox at the town’s welcome sign. Inveni, inscripsi, reposui. After I was done at the courthouse, I came back past the cache again. It added four miles to my journey to be sure about this cache, but it was a reasonable investment considering the 1520 miles I had already driven by that point. And I still had much farther to go once I arrived in…
