From a non-caching perspective, my weekend was absolutely lovely. From a caching perspective though, it was 50% failure. I was going to make a trip on Saturday morning out of town to somewhere where I could grab a whole bunch of caches since it’s been a while since I just did that. Unfortunately, my car decided to start having more problems on Friday so even driving it to the store is a risk, much less going to parts undecided. Back to the mechanic it will have to go. This especially sucks because, I had been formulating the rudiments of an idea of taking another road trip a little later this year, but that’s looking less likely since I have to drop a bunch of money on another car repair which I have reason to believe is related to the hit and run after I got back from Colorado. It’s not impossible that a trip might still happen, but I’m not currently betting money on it. However, Sunday I was able to make it to an Event for International Geocaching Day, so that’s a victory!

It got a good turn out, somewhere between fifteen and twenty folks. Many of them were usual suspects, but we got a few faces that were new to us. One of them was the husband of one of our occasional attendees. He also caches so I’ve seen his signature lots of times, but I never laid eyes on the man himself. Another was a really young cacher who has been dotting caches around town. His muggle mother was kind enough to bring him and I got to see the face behind these new opportunities. He recognized my name because I’ve been FTF on a few of his caches. Full disclosure: I always have a bit of internal chuckle when I hear “Atreides was here” out of someone else’s mouth. Our last new face occupied an odd position. She started her account fifteen years ago, but only started finding caches a few years ago. She’s gotten the occasional cache here and there over the years and, though she is not the hardcore cacher some of us are (not me; I’m casual as all get out), she came out for her first Event! Of course, we all gravitated to the new people. We know what everyone else is doing; we want new stories (and new ears to hear our old stories)! Not only did we get some new faces that we hope to see again, but we also got a new venue; a small, four-location chain started in Chelsea that specializes in American versions of Australian food. I can’t say authoritatively how the fare was (I had eaten lunch not long before) but the pistachio tiramisu was pretty good so I might go back sometime. I would call the Event a success! And thanks to Txg33kG1rl for putting it on for us. She managed to save my slightly lagging weekend!
