884. Decatur, Dekalb County (GA004)

This far away shot was far and away the best shot I could get of the building. All the other vantages were either blocked off by a building, construction, or the conveniently placed bus stop that inconveniently kept me from getting closer to another side. What I got wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t good either. I could also describe the courthouse the same way. I wasn’t especially enthused by it so I grade it as slightly better than adequate and no more.

The cache was a few blocks away at a restaurant. It was a nano without a cap on an iron railing. The log only stayed in because it had a pin in the center that stuck to the nano’s magnet from the inside.

Now, I know that a lot of you are thinking “Wait a minute. That county contains a far more important cache. Why didn’t you go get that one?” For those of you who don’t follow every “significant” cache closely, those people would be referring to Tour of Stone Mountain, the oldest Multi-cache in the world. Well, I didn’t go after it for for several reasons, some obvious, some not:

1. I’ve been to Stone Mountain before and I didn’t need to go back (not obvious).

2. I don’t feel a need to do anything involving Confederate “heroes” (obvious).

3. While I respect the engineering skill of Gutzon Borglum, I don’t feel a need to glorify any of his work (maybe obvious, maybe not).

4. I don’t usually have time to do a Multi when I’m on the road unless it’s quick and easy (obvious).

5. It’s not worth the $15 entrance fee because of 1., 4., and 6. (obvious)

And lastly, the most important reason:

6. Tour of Stone Mountain is not the oldest Multi-cache in the world.

Even the cache page says as much. The cache, when placed, was a Traditional. In 2003, it went missing but the CO was no longer in the area and asked if someone would replace it. Another cacher, the current CO, replaced it with a multi-stage experience. There are a bunch of Multi-caches that predate 2003. Therefore, there is nothing special about it as a cache. And yes, I will die on that hill.

All that said, what then, if what I have said is true, is the oldest Multi-cache in the world?

Tombstone, the oldest cache in Texas. Think about that for a while.

Anyway, once I was done in Decatur, I continued on to the center, to the big show. I’m talking about…

  1. FYI;

    The actual oldest multicache in the world is, and has always been, the very first cache originally published as a multi in consultation with Jeremy at HQ and the CO – 300mag. All other ‘pretenders’ either changed their original pre-dated trads to multis (before this action was blocked) or are claiming to be the oldest ACTIVE multi, etc…

    Confirmed by myself in conversation with both the CO and Jeremy, in person.
