Friday morning I noticed a new cache had dropped (actually, several did, but this one was close enough for me to note). I set out during lunch to go get it. I didn’t immediately get it by looking at the map, but it was across the street from a park that I have gotten a number of now archived caches at before, but that’s not important. I parked at a little free library which was conveniently, almost suspiciously, close to GZ, and gave the exterior a look. Seeing nothing of note outside, I opened the door and began looking at the book spines within. After a moment, I saw a book with the same name as the cache and pulled it out. Within was a hollow section with a log but the log that I expected to be clean and untouched by ink disappointed me. Another cacher, one known for grabbing FTFs, had beaten me there, but hadn’t logged it yet. A sad trombone warbled in the back of my head. Worst episode of Reading Rainbow EVER! But I had a cache for the day, so that’s what mattered. I put my own inscripsi on paper and then logged it online, noting that while I had not been the first to sign it, I was the first to log it. I submitted it and my log appeared. Except, there was another log where there had not been one a moment before. In the minute that I had spent logging it, the other cacher had submitted his log as well, apparently moments before I had, making my statement of being first to log useless! I comically shook my fist at my timing! But what did I really care? A cache is a cache is a cache.
The rest of the weekend was mostly spent at home. The temperatures dropped from pleasant to freezing within twelve hours. And rain. And ice. But that’s what a challenge is for. I know some people for whom “Safety third!” is less a clever joke and more an actual mantra. I am not one of those people. I have 2,231 counties (and county equivalents) to visit. I have a daughter who wants to finish the Texas County Challenge and someone’s going to heave to cart her around to do that. I’ve got a Mega to finish working on, so I have to stay safe for at least a couple more months to accomplish that. So I stayed hunkered down and warm. I must admit though: if I had a vehicle with 4-wheel drive, I might get out there and grab some, especially from the Infinity Gauntlet themed series that just dropped (Thanos of Titan has been my favorite comic villain for decades). But I guess I’m going to have to wait until the ice is gone for that.
