A couple of weeks ago, after talking about arguably the most annoying challenge in Christendom, I decided to go ahead and log the Earthcache Challenge. A few days later, the CO reached out to me about it with an issue. Two of my claimed finds (both of which I highlighted, by the way) were not correct for their categories. Holly Beach Reclamation should have been in the erosion category instead of coastal and Inclined to be Good should have been structural instead of a fold feature. Well, poopy. I went back over my Earthcache finds to look for corrections. I had a couple of other possibilities for a coastal feature, and Beach Hazard took the cake for that one. My fold feature, on the other hand, was a fail. Inclined to be Good was the only one I had ever encountered involving synclines and anticlines, so I had nothing else even close. Also, upon closer examination, my generated list of qualifying caches already had Inclined to be Good on it as (you guessed it) a structural feature. With a heavy heart, I deleted my challenge find. That said, I just substituted another completed challenge for that day (I have almost a couple hundred sitting completed and unclaimed, after all). I also noted that the CO mentioned that he would add three other earthcaches that didn’t show up on the checker (metamorphic, fossil site, and geologic time) to the list. List?, I thought. What list?
Turns out that the CO has been keeping a list of every earthcache ever made up to a certain point! Over the years, as people have used them to claim the challenge, he has been notating and updating it to add classifications to ones not subsequently classified! As you can imagine, he might not be able to keep up with all of the newer ones on his own (he is one man and this is a side hobby to his real life, after all), but to even make an attempt is astounding in my book! It also makes me wonder… Crowdsourcing is supposed to be a thing and many hands can make work light. What are the chances that some folks might be willing or able to add more recent (post 2020) local earthcaches for the list? If enough folks take some time, we might be able to get it a lot closer to post-covid modern day. And that means the checker might get updated as well. Think of the possibilities, not just for this challenge, but for EarthCache checkers worldwide!
