Out With The Old

The last few days have not found me going far afield from home.  A newer cacher has placed a few new caches in places I’ve long since picked over, which means I’ve been able to get home from work earlier since I haven’t been driving to the edges of the city (or beyond) for my daily find.  That’s been nice, but it’s also making me realize that I’m not paying attention to the caching near my own home.  I don’t know when older caches I’ve already gotten go away, and I don’t look for holes in the map.  Since I filter out previous finds like most people probably do, I currently see Austin as a giant caching desert, with the only ones visible being out of town proper or the crazy difficult ones I haven’t had the time, energy, or brainpower to go after.

Looking for hidey-holes in the map is something I need to start doing now.  Just yesterday, I came up with an interesting music-themed Mystery series.  I think I could make it work because the containers wouldn’t have to be crazy or special, meaning they should be easy enough to maintain (we know that’s a pain and a half lately).  I have a good place I could start it, but I’ve been saving that place for some other caches, possibly a challenge series I’ve been mulling over for a bit.  This is also making me think it’s time to replace my long-gone GPS.  I didn’t need more perfect coordinates before, but maybe it’s time.  I don’t expect Santa to hook me up with it, so whether I want it under the tree or not is a minor consideration.  I’ll cross that bridge when I get to it. I don’t know why I’ve been thinking about new hides lately.  Hiding’s hardly my raison d’etre (we all know that’s counties).  But it’s percolating, so I should (as the kids say) let it cook.  If we don’t hide, there’s nothing to find.  But let’s be honest: I’d rather be on the road.  I guess I’ll have to take what I can get.  Hiding will just have to do.
