914. Hebron, Thayer County (NE31)

It all started out in Nebraska. I drove through the night to get there and kind of had my mind occupied with my gas game where I fill up at whatever price and then feel smug or shake my fist depending on whether or not other gas stations have cheaper gas. I filled up at home at what I felt was an exorbitant price because of an overnight price hike. It felt right because pretty much every station between Austin and Minneapolis KS was cheaper. I know that there are variable pricing dynamics that I don’t entirely understand (because they almost sound like gambling to me), but I took the night to shake my fist at all the gas and the economics behind it. I especially had time to consider it in Denton County where I was stuck in traffic because of construction!

All that said, the Thayer County Courthouse was resplendent! It’s been a bit since I’ve been out on the road though, so I’m sure the first new courthouse will probably receive more love from me. The limestone showed nicely in the darkness as the very first rays of the sun were beginning to peek over the horizon. While I didn’t remember Nebraska being especially connected to limestone, it’s pretty much everywhere. I’ve run into other limestone ones in other places so why not Nebraska?

I grabbed the cache on the way into town, a tube hidden in a telephone pole. The location was of note because it was outside the school where six-man football was invented. I didn’t even know it was a thing so that night I learned something. Probably not for long though. I had driven a long time to get to Hebron and I had a lot of driving to do after I left, heading for…
