Oh, Minnesota!
This was my first time in Minnesota, not counting a layover at the Minneapolis airport many years BC (Before Caching) that I don’t count because I never left the concourse. With such temptation, how could I be expected to stick with the plan as written? My first courthouse in Minnesota did nicely. It reminded me of Pawhuska and a couple of others, but I was still stuck on my routing issues. Had I known that Ortonville was so close to Milbank, I would have planned for this in the first place. This is why I’m looking for a better routing solution. Looking at the route ten stops at a time loses something when seeing the big picture would change my calculus. That said, I would pay a small price for this later, but that’s a couple of days down the road. I was living I the Now (which is now Then, but enough of temporal mechanics)!
There was supposed to be a simple Traditional at the courthouse, but I couldn’t find it. I’m not sure if it was missing or I just couldn’t find it in the dark. But someone else was kind enough to have placed a Multicache based on the Veterans’ Memorial in site. How fitting for the Fourth of July? It hadn’t been found in almost a year but once I figured out the coordinates (which was harder than expected at night) and got to GZ, a black taped pill bottle was awaiting me. Inveni, inscripsi, reposui. And with that I was done. I logged it and a new souvenir appeared. Having happily completed my first cache In a new state, I was pumped to continue on my way. It was time to return to the plan. I traveled up the side of Big Stone Lake, not able to see much of it due to the darkness, and then turned off to cross between it and Lake Traverse, soon reaching…
