952. Cherokee, Cherokee County (IA10)

After so many lovely courthouses, one of them had to be a dud.  You can’t have everything, can you?  A plaque out front revealed that the original courthouse, a lovely Romanesque building, had been destroyed in 1966.  With as small a place as Cherokee is, they may not have had the money to do better than … this.  I guess time is the thief of something or other if you want to get poetic about it.

Cherokee County was lousy with caches, the remains of some Event that had happened last year.  The good news was that I had many options.  The bad news was that it took me multiple attempts to get one.  The first one had to be aborted when a family of parents, grandparents, and half a dozen kids decided to come into the pocket park I was searching in.  My second attempt was thwarted when I was followed into a parking lot by another car.  The second car stayed away from me, but suspiciously away from me, if you get my meaning.  In hindsight, I think it was a parent teaching their kid to drive, but hindsight, in this case, isn’t even 20/20.  On my third try, I managed to find a micro in a tree that seemed a lot harder than it should have been.  After thinking about it for a minute, I realized the complicating factor: I was starting to get hungry!  It was late afternoon and I hadn’t eaten since breakfast so I took the opportunity to swing through somewhere and grab something so I would have something to eat on the way to…
