940. Cavalier, Pembina County (ND06)

Once again, heightened expectations were working to the detriment of this courthouse.  That said, it’s even better than the one in Grafton and Grafton was good.  Luckily, the cache made up for any imagined discrepancy in courthouse classification.

Someone was kind enough to place one at the courthouse itself and that someone was the Lord of Gilby himself, Trycacheus.  He left an excellent gadget cache for folks to figure out.  It looked familiar to me, and I had a vague recollection of seeing the Geocaching Vlogger do this cache in a video once.  I read the hint and memories began to fall into place.  You have to use something magnetic to figure out which of the many numbers on the exterior are part of the lock’s combination.  Thanks to a magnet on a stick, that was the easy part.  The hard part was actually opening the combination lock.  I don’t run into many on the road so it feels like I have to re-school myself on how to turn left and turn right appropriately because I still haven’t done this consistently since high school more than dickety-two years ago*.  But just as the internet had initially introduced me to this cache, it also tutored me once again on how to spin a combination lock.  It found the three magnetically significant numbers and then tried several iterations until I found the one that opened the lock and gave me access to the sweet loot inside.  Oh, happy day!  Callou!  Callay!  Once I had given it one of my stingily hoarded favorite points, I was off to the races again.  I ran a little bit east and then took a left turn and that’s how I found myself in…
