
On any other day, I would talk about how lovely the Walsh County Courthouse is. It’s a solid piece of art deco that deserves praise. However, after a string monstrously gorgeous courthouses, it feels lacking even though it lacks nothing. On this day, the standards were raised impossibly high.

As for the cache, I once again extolled the virtues of the humble LPC! Behind a hotel, I found one that asked, ironically on this weekend of all weekends, if I was proud to be an American. That is, for me at times, a complicated question. I love my country, but I’m not always proud of it. In fact, there are many times both past and present, when I have felt it wanting. To paraphrase Winston Churchill, we can be trusted to do the right thing after we’ve done everything else. I cold invoke Stephen Decatur and G. K. Chesterton once again, but I think I’ve devoted enough column inches to that question for myself.
Luckily, the entire county went by pretty quickly again. The entire visit took about 15 minutes, and that because I had to drive all the way to the other side of town (and by that I mean a mile and a half away from the courthouse). Again, I sped down the road, this time bound for…
