941. Hallock, Kittson County (MN05)

I felt a little bit bad thinking that from a courthouse perspective, very little in Minnesota had thus far compared to the bounties of North Dakota. Because of that thought, however, I didn’t expect much out of the Kittson County Courthouse so I wasn’t especially disappointed with it. It was almost a case study for the Future Arborists of America: there’s a big line of trees in front of the building, but they’re spaced just enough apart that I was able to get some photography done. To sum up, I don’t hate it, but I don’t especially like it, either. It did manage to keep my attention for a few minutes though. Carved along the top was a quote of some kind: “The greatest honor of a free born person is to preserve freedom for their children.” It was incredibly familiar; I couldn’t help thinking I’d seen it carved into a courthouse before. Leafing though the archives, however, revealed no sign of it. If I had seen it before, I feel I would have said something, but I am a fickle narrator about such things some times. Google turned up nothing either. I could go through the hundreds of courthouse photos I have thus far taken but I have neither the time nor the energy for that. At this point, all I can do is hope to stumble across the words somewhere else and remember to note them.

A nearby cache was the most popular in the county, so I felt I had to go after it with it being so close and all. I quickly saw why. at GZ, I came across a pony keg with a lock on the side of it. I could tell that it had previously been a more involved gadget cache, but had been repurposed and reused once its mechanism had broken. Once I got the combination to the lock, I cracked it open to find a very America-themed ammo can within. It totally earned one of my stingily hoarded favorite points. However, as I was signing the log, I saw a big white SUV pull into the parking lot behind my vehicle marked Kittson County Sheriff. I gave a deep sigh and prepared myself as the driver’s side window came down, steeling myself for my least favorite travel encounter. And from that window I heard the most Minnesota accented voice say “Oh! Geo-box!” That made things a lot easier. He apparently saw someone (me) pull into the parking lot of a place he knew was closed so he wanted to make sure nobody was up to no good or anything. I get it. I was just a visitor there. And once I was done, I set off for my next port of call…
