945. Madison, Lac qui Parle County (MN09)

The Midwest strikes again! I felt Ada would be a good harbinger of courthouses to come, and Madison did not undermine that notion. Part of me found it odd that the courthouse would be labeled, almost generically in my opinion, “court house.” But I guess we know we’re in Lac qui Parle County so there’s no real need to push the issue. Also, Why is the “q” in the county name lowercase? I have no doubt that there is some idiosyncrasy of French involved, but I neither know nor ultimately care in any real way. Having accomplished one of my primary goals, I decided to attend to a secondary goal on the way to finding a cache. I just had to see the greatest tourist draw of Madison, the self proclaimed lutefisk capital of the world.

I basked in the shadow of the largest (and only) cod statue I had ever seen! Indeed, it has the title of largest lutefisk in the world! I give you Mr. Lou T. Fisk, unofficial mascot of Madison! Mr. Fisk ended up saving me some travel as well. Of course there was a cache there!

A fish that poops nanos? I sense some kind of business opportunity! Or not. Inveni, inscripsi, reposui. And since I didn’t have to go elsewhere and get a cache, I managed to get back some of the time lost on the long drive down to southern Minnesota. As I drove south from the park where Mr. Fisk lives, I saw a sign noting that I was passing the 45th parallel. I was no longer closer to the North Pole than to the Equator, which is something I never even spent a moment considering at any point in the planning or execution of the trip.
