Burnet II (Electric Boogaloo)

So this is less about Burnet than it is a trip summary.  Quite honestly, I didn’t get enough time in Burnet to really get a feel for it or the people.  It also didn’t seem to have a lot of interesting stuff, either.  I could be wrong but meh.

So yes, it was a nice drive through a couple of surrounding counties I’ve never been to.  I’m not afraid of traveling in small counties and such, but I’m not going to lie and say that I’m not a tiny bit frosty when I do.  There are some places in Texas that are more notorious for that kind of thing (friends of mine and I often joke that one of East Texas’ primary exports is casual racism) and when I get to those points, I will either be passing through quickly or traveling with company.  The biggest thing that jumped out at me on this trip is how I don’t remember seeing one other black person.  When I’m in small town Texas, I usually see some locals even if they’re poor.  I’m even realizing I didn’t see that many Hispanics, either (N.B. I would happily follow geocachingwhilehispanic.com).

Of course, the Confederacy is everywhere.  I knew it would be, but there’s a difference between knowing and understanding.  And it’s not even that it exists.  It’s that it’s so obvious in what are public places fulfilling key administrative and governmental functions.  Austin is pretty liberal and a lot of that kind of stuff has been removed from such places for the most part (the State government, on the other hand…).  I doubt it will be so prominent in West Texas but it will be what it is.

All that said, it’s pretty beautiful out there on the roads.  I can already think of three or four things I wish I had been able to take photos of.  I’m really looking forward to when it gets a little cooler around here.  I’m already planning my next jaunt.  I’m not going to lie: I’m trying to figure out how to make this happen this weekend, real life be damned…  I’m thinking about hitting three seats, but I may have to make it two like last time.  That said, my kids are wanting to go to NASA again so I may be taking a trip to Houston in a few weeks.  That seems like a hard trip.  I don’t know if I’ll find any caches there… 😛

I think I’ll do one about my planned trips and travel projects soon.  If I have all this stuff on my mind, writing it down might make it a bit easier to plan, no?
