790. Centreville, Queen Anne’s County (MD10)

The courthouse in Centreville looked about as classic as it gets. However, as previously established, what do I know? But yes, it turned out to be a true Georgian courthouse, finished in 1796. As fate would have it, this is actually the old county courthouse, and the actual courthouse is on the next block over. I should have suspected that since no flags were flying here. However, this courthouse is still in active use by the county, so (remembering that I am sometimes aesthetic trash) I have no qualms about photographing the courthouse I prefer.

That said, I also had another reason for being happy to get to this county. Five counties in the United States begin with the letter q. Queen Anne’s County, joining Quay and Quitman Counties, is my third. I cared about such things more at one time because I have worked a few alphabetical county challenges over the years, and q is always the difficult one because there isn’t a q county in Texas (though Quay is right over the border in New Mexico). The true razor for these alphabetical challenges is the letter z (seeing as there are only three z counties in the US), but we don’t worry about that in Texas because two of the three are here. One day, Ziebach County, South Dakota! One day!

On the way to town, we noticed a simple Virtual that would fulfill our needs. Once we read its subject, there was universal agreement that we should stop for it because of my peculiar fixation. This is how we found ourselves at the Queenstown Colonial Courthouse. Queenstown, “Parvus Urbs Ad Is Aqua,” was home to the county courthouse before the county seat moved to Centreville in 1782 and was a small joy for me to behold, both for its courthouse and for my chance to use Latin in the wild. As a simple cache on the way to more important counties, it was a joy for everyone else. Even better for me was that it was across the street from a post office, allowing me to mail a postcard home. We milled around for a few moments, looking for the answers to the presented questions, and then, once I returned to the car from my postal endeavors, set off again, this time bound for…
