Snow Business

It snowed yesterday in Austin. I know there are those of you in more northerly climes like Boston or Seattle or Omaha who are going to laugh at me because the amount of snow that shuts down this city is what you all call a spring Tuesday, but for us, this is a thing. We’re still living with the traumatic memories of the Snowpocalypse of four years ago, so it’ll take a little more time before we’re normal again (that’s a discussion for another day), but even so, we’re just not set up for this sort of thing. My point here (and I do have one) is that conditions weren’t that bad. I got out, did what needed to be done, and then went back home to stay warm (he said as if there were no heat in the car).

As you all have probably surmised, I am not made for snow. I like snow. It’s fun to look at a snowy view. I have thrown a few snowballs in my life. But when it comes to travel, I neither trust snow nor trust myself on snow. It probably goes back to something in my youth when I got my heart broken, almost went into a ditch driving home on snow and ice, and then my car never started again. It also may have to do with the fact that I never got any significant experience driving in snow because it happens so infrequently here. It’s interfering with my travels now. Winter might as well be a no-travel time. Sure, Florida and Southern California are reasonable options, but even the Deep South gets snow, so geography is no guarantee of anything. And one can only stay south of I-20 for so long. Three whole seasons is a good amount of time to travel, but I want more. Not that it matters because I’m not going anywhere right this moment, regardless of the weather.

Obviously, I’m thinking about being back on the road again. That’s not helping things.

Of course, the new big news is the reveal of a new Locationless Cache! Just get a photo of yourself (or, in my case, my trusty umbrella) next to a preexisting “25” out in the world. Las Cruces, Denver, and Cheyenne are pretty set. The rest of us may have to work a bit harder. It all kicks off in a few days (on the 25th, of course), so you’ve got eleven months to keep your eyes open for a good and photogenic spot!
